QuestionsForsyth County Automotive Services maintains a fleet of
600 plus vehicles and equipment; includes both non emergency as
well as all emergency vehicles that are used by the Sheriff's
Department, Animal Services, and Emergency Services. Automotive
Services manages four motor pool locations and multiple fueling
locations. The Division also maintains a fully stocked parts
inventory. With the high demands of maintaining a Fleet of vehicles
responsible for the safety of our citizens the daily tasks can be
very exciting and require a high level of dedication.The Automotive
Electronic Technician performs complex repairs on a variety of
County Owned Vehicles and or Equipment. Ability to operate software
packages to perform fleet maintenance is essential. Install
electrical/electronic components into new and existing emergency
and fleet vehicles in accordance with component and vehicle
specifications to insure proper and safe operation. Monitor
inventory and keep up with new innovations and make informed
suggestions to improve efficiency of installations and procurement
of components. Read and interpret wiring diagrams of vehicles and
electronic components, evaluate and program new equipment, diagnose
and replace or repair installed older or new
components.Distinguishing Features: Employees in this position must
ascertain and install components to upfit vehicles. Some components
require programming and setup along with collaboration with
Sheriffs IT and MIS Departments to insure vehicles are compatible
and operable when released. When necessary, will perform
maintenance and repairs to complete preventive maintenance and
assist other technicians with light/heavy/electrical repairs.*
Ability to carefully remove equipment from older and out-of-service
vehicles to reinstall in newand in-service-vehicles and/or to store
for future use.* Ability to use computer and internet based
aftermarket and manufacturers websites fordiagnosing/ repairing/
and modifying while retaining original safety systems in correct
operation.* Ability to diagnose original manufacturer's electronic
safety components and repair whennecessary.* Ability to
intelligently communicate and work with other department personnel/
vehicleoperators/ component manufacturers on
installations/removals/ diagnostics of vehicles.* Ability to apply
electrical principles and formulas.* Ability to lift 50-100 lbs
occasionally, 25-50 lbs frequently or up to 10-20 lbs
constantly.Minimum Education and Experience: - High School Diploma
or GED required.* 5 years experience installing and up-fitting
vehicles required.* Must possess ASE Certifications and be eligible
to receive and pass GM or AC Delco specialized electronics
training.* Valid driver's license required.* An equivalent
combination of education and experience may be considered for the
minimum requirements.* Current EVT Certification preferred.*
Technical experience of diagnostics and electrical repairs
preferred.Essential Duties and Responsibilities: - Install
electrical/electronic components into new and existing emergency
and fleet vehicles inaccordance with component and vehicle
specifications to insure proper and safe operation.* Monitor
inventory and keep up with new innovations and make informed
suggestions to improveefficiency of installations and procurement
of components.* Read and interpret wiring diagrams of vehicles and
electronic components, evaluate and programnew equipment, diagnose
and replace or repair installed older or new components.* Remove
complete front and rear bumper cover assemblies including front and
rear encapsulatedlamps, headliners, heating and air conditioning in
order to install and modify for requiredelectronic equipment
installation.* Modify vehicle components and fabricate mounts to
install and comply with safety of occupantsand allow vehicle
original equipment, including air bags and other restraints, to
operate asdesigned by the manufacturer.* Maintaining a specific
license such as a driver's license in good standing, without a
lapse or lossof a privilege to drive in compliance with North
Carolina law, and in compliance with applicableDOT standards for
commercial motor vehicle drivers if required to perform the duties
assigned tothe position.
