JOB SUMMARY: Collects blood specimens for the clinical laboratories. Functions as an intermediary between the patient, patient caregivers, and the laboratories. Assures proper specimen collection and identification in compliance with section policies and procedures. Performs appropriate patient procedures in accordance with age-specific guidelines for the age groups served.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: High school graduate or equivalent Two year age appropriate phlebotomy experience preferred CPR Certification
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION: ASCP, AMT, ASPT or equivalent certification from an accredited Phlebotomy training program that includes successful completion of a certification exam with passing scores.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to listen and communicate effectively. Ability to work cooperatively. Excellent customer service skills. Basic computer skills. May require working any shift within the operation hours of the department and could include weekends and Holidays. Discernment and judgement. Attention to detail.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Exposed to infection from disease-bearing specimens or patients. Exposed to risk of bloodborne/airborne disease. Must wear protective equipment (gloves, gowns/lab coats, eye protection, face protection). May be exposed to odorous chemicals and specimens. Moderate noise environment. Subject to injury from sharps. May require judgment/action which could result in death of patient. Subject to many interruptions. Subject to stressful situations. Contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances.
