- Education: Master's Degree required.
- Experience: Three to five years independent clinical experience
as a Medical Physicist required.
- Licensure/Certification/Registration: Board certification by
the American Board of Radiology or equiv.
- Additional Skills Required: The ability to work independently
and collaboratively in a group setting. Excellent communication
skills, both written and verbal. Strong critical thinking and
problem solving ability. Attentiveness to detail. Ability to
closely follow established procedures. Ability to gather data,
compile information, and prepare reports. Ability to supervise and
train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and
scheduling work assignments. In-depth knowledge and understanding
of current radiation therapy principles, methods, procedures, and
techniques. Knowledge and understanding of the operational
characteristics, usage, and safety parameters of a comprehensive
range of radiation therapy equipment and facilities. Advanced
knowledge of radiation safety principles, methods, and procedures.
Knowledge of Federal, State, and local regulations, guidelines, and
standards for the provision of medical physics/radiation therapy to
patients. Ability to occasionally travel to meetings or other
professional functions. Ability to occasionally work at nights, on
Holidays and/or weekends when needed.
- Additional Skills Preferred: The medical physicist is a member
of the Cancer Center Team who is thoroughly familiar with the
radiation equipment and radioactive sources commonly utilized in
the field of Radiation Oncology. The medical physicist is required
to have advanced knowledge of treatment planning, calibration of
equipment, electronic medical records documentation and radiation
safety. Specifically the individual must be well versed with
stereotactic radiosurgery treatment planning, QA and calibration of
such equipment. The medical physicist will also have practical
experience in all aspects of prostate seed brachytherapy treatment
planning, assisting the radiation oncologist in the operating room
and post planning. In addition this individual will work closely
with the physicians, dosimetrists, therapists and physicists to
ensure the best treatment possible for our patients. As member of
the team responsible for the treatment of patients the incumbent is
responsible for safety, calibration and quality control of all
radioactive materials to include Iridium 192 high dose rate
afterloader, I-125 brachytherapy seeds and Ra-223
radiopharmaceuticals; and radiation producing equipment to include
linear accelerators and CT. This individual will maintain
calibration and quality assurance of devices such as ion chambers,
electrometers, scanning equipment, film, TLDs. He/she will be able
to perform calculations related to verification of patient
treatment, calibration of equipment and shielding for new treatment
facilities and new procedures. This individual will participate in
the Radiation Safety Program, develop internal policies and
procedures and have the ability to apply knowledge of Federal,
State, and local regulations, guidelines and standards for the
provision of safe radiation therapy treatment to our patients.
